The CSK 2024 squad made significant moves in the IPL 2024 auction with a specific objective in mind, replacing the void left by Ben Stokes. While they made a strong bid for Pat Cummins, ultimately, they secured the services of New Zealand allrounders Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra. Mitchell, fresh off two impressive centuries against India in the ODI World Cup, adds power to their batting lineup. Ravindra serves as a valuable backup for Moeen Ali. CSK also welcomed back bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman, who can thrive with his cutters on Chennai's slow pitches.
CSK's smart move was addressing the vacancy left by Ambati Rayudu. Instead of pursuing experienced Indian batters like Karun Nair and Manish Pandey, they opted for the promising 20-year-old uncapped Indian Sameer Rizvi. Rizvi showcased his prowess in the UP T20 league, amassing 455 runs in nine innings, including two centuries, at a remarkable strike rate of 188.8.

Mumbai Indians (MI) went all-in on strengthening their pace-bowling attack during the auction. In addition to Jasprit Bumrah and Jason Behrendorff, they acquired Sri Lanka's left-arm paceman Dilshan Madushanka, a standout performer in the recent World Cup, and South Africa's Gerald Coetzee, known for his all-round abilities. They also introduced a surprise element in Nuwan Thushara from Sri Lanka, who has drawn comparisons to the legendary Lasith Malinga.
However, MI missed an opportunity by not aggressively pursuing an overseas spinner to complement Piyush Chawla. Nevertheless, they managed to secure the services of Shreyas Gopal to address this area of concern.

Gujarat Titans entered the IPL 2024 auction with a considerable purse and specific objectives. While finding a direct replacement for Hardik Pandya proved challenging, the new Impact Player rule offered them flexibility. They secured Azmatullah Omarzai at an uncontested price, an Afghan standout from the ODI World Cup.
Although they initially pursued Mitchell Starc, eventually allowing Kolkata Knight Riders to secure him for a record INR 24.75 crore, the Titans opted for uncapped Australian left-arm seamer Spencer Johnson. They bolstered their pace attack further with the addition of experienced Umesh Yadav and young talent Kartik Tyagi. Their middle-order received a power-hitting boost with Shahrukh Khan, who also provides an off-spin option. However, the reigning champions missed an opportunity to find a suitable replacement for Wriddhiman Saha.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: A Strong Core Takes Shape

Present squad strength: 25 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Travis Head (Rs. 6.80 crores), Wanindu Hasaranga (Rs. 1.5 crore), Pat Cummins (Rs. 20.50 crore), Jaydev Unadkat (Rs. 1.60 crore), Akash Singh (Rs. 20 lakh), Jhathavedh Subramanyan (Rs. 20 lakh).
Players retained before the auction: Abdul Samad, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, Sanvir Singh, Heinrich Klaasen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Agarwal, T. Natarajan, Anmolpreet Singh, Mayank Markande, Upendra Singh Yadav, Umran Malik, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Shahbaz Ahmed (from RCB).
Player slots available: 0
Purse remaining: INR 3.2 crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made significant moves during the auction, particularly in the overseas player department. Their acquisitions left them with a positive dilemma regarding their four overseas slots. They added Australia's ODI World Cup-winning captain, Pat Cummins, to their roster with a whopping INR 20.5 crore bid, strengthening their leadership core alongside Aiden Markram, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Mayank Agarwal.
Travis Head's inclusion provides a solution to their early batting struggles, while Wanindu Hasaranga's acquisition was a valuable steal. SRH now boasts an almost complete XI to rely on for the 2024 season.

Kolkata Knight Riders: A High-Stakes Auction

Present squad strength: 23 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 crore) in the IPL 2024 auction, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (INR 2 crore), Sherfane Rutherford (INR 1.5 crore), Gus Atkinson (INR 1 crore), KS Bharat (INR 50 lakh), Chetan Sakariya (INR 50 lakh), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (INR 20 lakh), Ramandeep Singh (INR 20 lakh), Manish Pandey (INR 50 lakh), Sakib Hussain (INR 20 lakh)
Players retained before auction: Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shreyas Iyer, Jason Roy, Sunil Narine, Suyash Sharma, Anukul Roy, Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakaravarthy.
Player slots available: 2 (0)
Purse remaining: INR 1.35 crore

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made headlines with their whopping INR 24.75 crore acquisition of Mitchell Starc. This colossal investment was their second signing, following Chetan Sakariya. While the Starc signing was a significant move, KKR managed the rest of the auction wisely, securing valuable backup players.
They addressed the need for a spin-bowling option by bringing in Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who can fill the shoes of Sunil Narine. KS Bharat was added to provide depth in the wicketkeeper-batsman department, compensating for Rahmanullah Gurbaz's absence. KKR also reinforced their batting with the addition of Sherfane Rutherford and made an astute choice in English pacer Gus Atkinson to bolster their bowling lineup.
However, their vulnerability lies in batting depth, primarily relying on Rahmanullah Gurbaz as an opener and putting faith in the relatively unproven Ramandeep Singh at No. 7. Singh displayed promise with 77 runs in 36 balls at a strike rate of over 200 across three innings during the 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Challenges in Pursuit

Present squad strength: 25 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Alzarri Joseph (Rs. 11.50 crore), Yash Dayal (Rs. 5 crore), Tom Curran (Rs. 1.5 crores), Lockie Ferguson (Rs. 2 crore), Swapnil Singh (Rs. 20 lakh), Saurav Chauhan (Rs. 20 lakh).
Players retained before auction: Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Anuj Rawat, Dinesh Karthik, Suyash Prabhudessai, Will Jacks, Mahipal Lomror, Karn Sharma, Manoj Bhandage, Mayank Dagar (from SRH), Vijaykumar Vyshak, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Himanshu Sharma, Rajan Kumar, Cameron Green (from MI).
Player slots available: 0
Purse remaining: INR 2.85 crore

RCB team 2024 players list with price indicates their challenges during the IPL 2024 auction, having already committed to the trade for all-rounder Cameron Green. This left them in a vulnerable position as they pursued high-value players like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, evident from their bid of INR 20.25 crore for Cummins, despite having a purse of INR 23.15 crore. Consequently, they refrained from pursuing Starc. While RCB managed to secure the services of Alzarri Joseph, Lockie Ferguson, Tom Curran, and Yash Dayal, none of these players serve as an ideal replacement for death-over specialist Harshal Patel. The absence of a substitute for Wanindu Hasaranga also leaves their bowling unit looking fragile.

Lucknow Super Giants: Budget Constraints

Players bought: Shivam Mavi (Rs. 6.40 crore), Arshin Kulkarni (Rs. 20 lakh), M. Siddharth (Rs. 2.40 crore), Ashton Turner (Rs. 1 crore), David Willey (Rs. 2 crore), Mohd. Arshad Khan (Rs. 20 lakh).
Players retained before auction: KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, Deepak Hooda, Devdutt Padikkal (from RR), Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq, Krunal Pandya, Yudhvir Singh, Prerak Mankad, Yash Thakur, Amit Mishra, Mark Wood, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, K. Gowtham.
Player slots available: 0
Purse remaining: INR 0.95 crore
Lucknow Super Giants faced significant budget constraints during the auction, making it challenging to compete with teams like CSK, SRH, and Gujarat, who had significantly larger budgets. Their trade acquisition of Devdutt Padikkal presented an opportunity for KL Rahul to fulfill his middle-order batting role.
However, the absence of experienced Indian pace options remains a major concern, placing a substantial burden on Mark Wood.

Rajasthan Royals: Mid-Table Challenges

Present squad strength: 22 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Rovman Powell (Rs. 7.4 crore), Shubham Dubey (Rs. 5.80 crore), Tom Kohler-Cadmore (Rs. 40 lakh), Abid Mushtaq (Rs. 20 lakh), Nandre Burger (Rs. 50 lakh).
Players retained before auction: Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Donovan Ferreira, Kunal Rathore, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Sen, Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna, Sandeep Sharma, Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, Avesh Khan (from LSG).
Player slots available: 3 (0)
Purse remaining: INR 0.2 crore

Rajasthan Royals (RR) entered the auction with eight slots to fill and INR 14.5 crore in hand but walked out with the smallest overall squad of 22 members and just INR 20 lakh left. This reflects the intensity of their auction endeavors. A significant chunk, INR 13.2 crore, was spent on their first two acquisitions, Rovman Powell and Shubham Dubey, aimed at strengthening their middle-order.
They also secured backup options for Trent Boult and Jos Buttler with Nandre Burger and Tom Kohler-Cadmore, respectively. However, RR missed the opportunity to acquire an experienced all-rounder.

Delhi Capitals: The Keeper Conundrum

Present squad strength: 25 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Harry Brook (Rs. 4 crore), Tristan Stubbs (Rs. 50 lakh), Ricky Bhui (Rs. 20 lakh), Kumar Kushagra (Rs. 7.20 crore), Rasikh Dar (Rs. 20 lakh), Jhye Richardson (Rs. 5 crore), Sumit Kumar (Rs. 1 crore), Shai Hope (Rs. 75 lakh), Swastik Chhikara (Rs. 20 lakh).
Players retained before the auction: Rishabh Pant, Pravin Dubey, David Warner, Vicky Ostwal, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje, Abishek Porel, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Lungi Ngidi, Lalit Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Mitchell Marsh, Ishant Sharma, Yash Dhull, Mukesh Kumar.
Player slots available: 0
Purse remaining: INR 9.9 crore
Delhi Capitals (DC) made it clear during the auction that if Rishabh Pant is available, he will be playing as a batter. DC acquired five wicketkeepers on Tuesday—two overseas players in Tristan Stubbs and Shai Hope, and three Indian uncapped players in Kumar Kushagra, Ricky Bhui, and Sumit Kumar. They also added Harry Brook to bolster their batting, hoping for improved performance compared to his previous season with SRH.
While DC succeeded in acquiring Jhye Richardson as a backup for the recovering Anrich Nortje, they appear to lack depth in batting, with considerable reliance on Prithvi Shaw. The absence of backup Indian openers is another concern.

Punjab Kings: Unfulfilled Hopes

Harshal Patel is One of the Best Death-Over Bowlers in the Country: Tendulkar

Present squad strength: 25 (overseas 8)
Players bought: Harshal Patel (Rs. 11.75 crore), Chris Woakes (Rs. 4.20 crore), Ashutosh Sharma (Rs. 20 lakh), Vishwanath Pratap Singh (Rs. 20 lakh), Shashank Singh (Rs. 20 lakh), Tanay Thyagarajann (Rs. 20 lakh), Prince Choudhary (Rs. 20 lakh), Rilee Rossouw (Rs. 8 crore).
Players retained before auction: Shikhar Dhawan, Matthew Short, Prabhsimran Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Sikandar Raza, Rishi Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Atharva Taide, Arshdeep Singh, Nathan Ellis, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Bhatia, Vidwath Kaverappa, Shivam Singh.
Player slots available: 0
Purse remaining: INR 4.15 crore

Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a mixed outing in Dubai, with a notable incident involving Shashank Singh at the fag end of the auction. They did secure Harshal Patel, bolstering their pace lineup alongside Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh. In the latter part of the auction, they added Rilee Rossouw and Chris Woakes as backup options.
However, PBKS missed out on reacquiring Shahrukh Khan, which left a sour taste, considering he should not have been let go in the first place. They did chase Shahrukh Khan but perhaps refrained from going the extra mile to avoid exceeding his previous season's price. Nonetheless, they made a substantial investment in Rossouw, who may not feature as frequently as the highly-touted Indian talent from Tamil Nadu.

Conclusion

The IPL 2024 auction, part of the IPL 2024 schedule, highlighted the strategic importance of the IPL trade window 2024. Teams like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings all made notable signings, each focusing on specific areas to strengthen their squads. The IPL 2023 IPL auction players list and IPL 2024 released players list played a crucial role in the decision-making. This season is gearing up to be a showcase of skill and strategy in cricket.
